The most isolated major city on earth. Perth sits on the edge of the Indian Ocean. The nearest comparable city is Adelaide — 2,700 kilometres away by road. The Outback starts at the city limits. The ocean is never far behind. Riders here do not casually hop across the country on a weekend. The distances do not allow it. The heat does not forgive it. Summer pushes 45 degrees Celsius in the Outback. The roads go from sealed to gravel without warning. Fuel stops can be 250 kilometres apart. And when the season opens — April through October — it is some of the most spectacular riding on the planet. The Nullarbor Plain stretches 1,200 kilometres across treeless desert. The longest straight road in Australia runs 147 kilometres without a single curve. The Gibb River Road cuts through ancient Kimberley gorges. Margaret River winds through karri forest down to Cape Leeuwin — where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet. Cathy rides all of it. Western Australia produces a particular kind of rider. Self-reliant.
